The engagement of the hearts and minds of employees is more important than ever to improve performance and a sustainable competitive advantage. The old methods of the “carrot and stick” are much less effective now. They contradict the intrinsic motivations and principles of motivation that hold the key to long-term loyalty of employees.
We all need an environment that promotes trust, provides the appreciation and explanation of “why”, encourages high standards without control, and encourages the freedom to experiment. “Carrot and stick” approaches cannot create this type of environment.
